Her's was not a written recipe, it was one in her head. I grew up on a farm and we always had fresh cream and fresh milk to use. I looked for quite some time for a book that had a home made ice cream recipe that could compare to my Mom's. My main job was to turn the crank on the old hand cranked ice cream maker. There is one recipe in here that is like the method she used and it tastes close. My mouth still waters when I think of eating Mom's home canned peaches with fresh cream on them or better still home made ice cream.I highly recommend this book I believe I found it in this book. I had forgotten the exact method she used and she passed on.
Bought this 6 quart ice cream maker because of the heavy duty features and good reviews. The rep advised they get a problem like this about once every six months. Then the motor started grinding and after about three weeks the thing quit during the fourth batch of ice cream. Called the 1-800 customer service number and received excellent service.
In all my years of buying items, this was probably the best customer service received. I rated this unit 4 stars due to the solid construction of it and the manner it made ice cream when it was working. I anticipate checking out the new motor when I receive it and making sure there is no repeat problems. Oh, if you purchase one, buy some good ice cream recipe books with it. Afterwards, I plan on buying two more for my older kids for Christmas, at a 25% discount that the rep also offered me. It looked good and worked great at first, making excellent ice cream.
It is a top rate item. I recommend the books, Caroline Liddell and Robin Weir's Frozen Desserts; Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream & Dessert Book; and Thomas Quinn's Old-Fashioned Homemade Ice Cream. Am glad I had keep using it after the third batch and didn't put it away for winter. They are shipping a new motor and postage to return the burned out motor.
My husband has liked every recipe that I have tried from this book. I bought this book to make ice cream with a Kitchenaid freezer bowl attachment.
IT IS VERY EDUCATIONAL.BECAUSE I AM USING AN ELECTRIC 2-QT ICE CREAM MAKER I WILL HAVE TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE ALL THE RECIPES WHICH MAKE ONE GALLON. LOVED ALL THE NOSTALGIA. THIS BOOK IS A GOOD REFERENCE FOR MAKING OLD-FASHIONED ICE CREAM.
My kids don't want store bought Ice Cream anymore. We have used a couple of recipes and have loved them.
